The geometry behind an aspect
A chart is a circle, so any two points can be described by the angle between them. Certain angles have been given traditional names and interpretive meanings in astrology. The calculation is geometric; the meaning applied to it is astrological interpretation.
An aspect is not a standalone verdict. It becomes more useful only when considered with the planets involved, their signs and houses when reliably known, other chart patterns, and a person’s actual context.
Five commonly discussed aspects
These descriptions are broad traditional associations. They are not promises of a specific experience or outcome.
- Conjunction: Two points close together. It is often read as a blending or concentration of their themes.
- Opposition: Points roughly 180 degrees apart. It is often explored through contrast, relationship, or a need to hold two perspectives.
- Trine: Points roughly 120 degrees apart. It is traditionally associated with ease, flow, or an available affinity.
- Square: Points roughly 90 degrees apart. It is often associated with friction, pressure, or an invitation to take action.
- Sextile: Points roughly 60 degrees apart. It is often read as a potential connection that may develop through attention or participation.
What an orb means
An orb is the amount of distance allowed from an exact angle. For example, two planets may be described as square even if they are not exactly 90 degrees apart, provided they fall within the orb a method uses.
There is no single orb rule shared by every astrological tradition. A careful calculation policy should define its orb choices clearly and apply them consistently rather than treating every near-angle as equally meaningful.
Context changes the conversation
A square is not automatically bad, and a trine is not automatically good. A challenging aspect can describe a productive tension; an easy one can describe something that is available but not automatically used. Those are interpretive possibilities, not deterministic predictions.
NextStepAstro plans to calculate major aspects deterministically as part of a future validated chart engine. The current preview does not calculate aspects or provide personal aspect interpretations.
